Every church or ministry has different needs. They have varying cultures and personalities. Though at times the basic logistics of ministry pose a problem, it's usually group dynamics, relationships, and team building that present the biggest hindrance to reaching goals.

In my church when growth, change, transition, or development was called for, our pastor would bring in someone from the outside who had expertise and passion to stir our hearts, challenge our thinking, and give us tools to take things to the next level.

About 20 years ago, one of those expert voices was EMI. They taught us to listen to one another and build a caring community. The experience changed me as a leader. When I began ministering with warmth, empathy and respect, my team began to grow, not just in our ability to serve in ministry, but more importantly in knowing and loving one another. We began to move as one unit, which increased both our number and capacity in tangible and intangible ways.

EMI's 3-course Relationship Series is designed to do all of that.

LISTENING for HEAVEN'S SAKE, the first in the series, lays a skill foundation. Learning the skill of empathy maximizes your ability to communicate care and understanding. It helps to overcome barriers in communication that lead to conflict, misunderstanding, impatience, and manipulation. This essential tools positively impact all relational and ministry contexts.

SPEAKING the TRUTH in LOVE. Too often Christians settle for false community. Think about it. How do you safely get past the surface in relationships to the deeper heart? If you've taken Listening, it's important to continue the transformational skill process by experiencing Speaking. Learn how to facilitate someone's journey into change, including how to set up appropriate goals, accountability, and confrontation.   Imagine a congregation walking genuinely and effectively together into healing.

RENEWING the MIND is essential for Christians seeking a practical way to change. Romans 12:2--"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."   Students learn ways to identify what is keeping them stuck in negative feelings or behaviors by bringing God's truth in to begin a transformation process. Experience God's freedom through a small group community practice of a new skill. It's powerful!

Dating EMI

I heard about Equipping Ministries International some 5 years ago. It sounded like a neat organization that I shared some passion with, but travel logistics got in the way of my active involvement. Since moving to Akron, I decided to look into EMI's training as one of my passions is teaching and equipping.

After attending a training and seeing the immediate impact on the participants, I inquired into what's involved in becoming an EMI trainer. I was invited to start a "dating relationship" with EMI -- spend some time experiencing who they are and how they go about ministry. Then decide if we want to become "engaged" in ministry together.

I attended several trainings, both on-site contracted trainings in a local congregation and LIFE Seminar workshops. I find myself continually amazed at the highly practical nature of what they are doing. Of the boatload of seminars and conferences I've attended, EMI is the ONLY one that offers actual time to practice the skills being taught. And in the practice time ministry happens! What a concept!

Another dimension of EMI that really jazzes me is their work overseas. EMI has a high value for training leaders from other countries in their International School of Service-- a comprehensive 8-courses-in-8-days training. My dream would be to travel overseas one day as a master teacher with EMI.

I have moved beyond "dating" and am now committed to becoming a certified EMI trainer. I am thrilled to be in a growing relationship with EMI, who is teaching believers world-wide how to love one another the way Jesus intended us to. And it really is all about relationships after all, isn't it? I encourage you to make a date with EMI. You, too, are likely to want to become engaged with them in ministry that transforms lives.
