WHY EMI TRAINING WORKS

Pam Ping, EMI Global Training Manager

Have you wondered why some trainings stay with you and change you -- and others seem to evaporate rather quickly?

Research indicates that people tend to retain only the first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes of a lecture.  That?s too much effort for too little impact.

EMI's teaching model is influenced by Paul's admonition in Philippians 4:9 "Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."

EMI believes that the goal of effective teaching is to lead someone into transformation.  The author of that change must be the Lord Himself.   Otherwise, what we teach could be experienced in a secular classroom.

Through 27 years of designing training, EMI has learned to implement specific key elements into every teaching.

First, in addition to acquiring new information, people need to experience the skill being taught and to receive immediate feedback as they practice. The opportunity in every skill class to "try on" new skills and to receive feedback, from other group members as well as a trained and experienced facilitator, distinguishes EMI training from most others.  Doesn't it make sense to encourage someone who's "getting it" and to correct what could become a bad habit before it has a chance to take root?

Second, people need a mental picture to take with them of what a new skill looks like.  EMI's classes include modeling through role plays, video clips, and team use of the skills during the class. This takes a teaching out of the theoretical into the real world.

Third, and most important, we invite the Holy Spirit to give new insight and to bring to mind situations that students can practice within small groups.  Real situations in practice bring real insights and renewed thinking.  This also comes through our tradition of a "Listening to God" time in class.

It's amazing to see how the Lord ministers healing and life change in one workshop.  And as people experience our intentional progression of skill development in a series of relationship skill courses, deeper changes happen.  And don't you know, God often brings situations after a workshop that give opportunity to practice, practice, practice what He's challenging us to learn.

I've often joked with our staff that EMI needs to put warning labels on our class notes: "Warning:  You'll never be the same!" and "God will give you opportunities to use what you are learning!?"

After all, isn't that what we're looking for?

Become EMI Teacher or Facilitator

A change agent must first be changed!

Our best teachers and facilitators have experienced the impact the Lord can have through EMI's training.  We encourage our trainers to share stories of how God uses EMI training to change lives, starting with their own!

So what does it take to become a teacher or facilitator?

First: A passion for what God will do - a belief that He indwells us and will use us to make a difference in someone?s life.  That's definitely why I've committed over 30 years to this training!

Second: Take the courses and ask God for opportunities to apply them in your own life.  The two essential courses to begin are Guiding Life-Changing Small Groups and Listening for Heaven's Sake.  The other courses build on these two, both can be taken in one Cincinnati LIFE Seminar weekend.

Third: Take Teacher Training.  Learn EMI's well-developed approach to training, and take advantage of a safe place to try it.   You will be given a 10 minute teaching to present in a small group where you will receive encouragement and constructive feedback. (Offered twice annually.) To register for the upcoming Intensive Teacher Training workshop, click here.

Fourth: Do a Facilitator Practicum.  EMI provides opportunities for practice and experience. With an EMI coach giving direction and feedback, you will lead a small group in an EMI workshop.

Fifth: Take the other foundational skill courses. Speaking the Truth in Love and Renewing the Mind.   This will give you the full spectrum of skills EMI believes is necessary to lay a solid, safe, and effective foundation for life and ministry.

CUBA Spotlight

EMI's Spanish team has been equipping key leaders in 3 denominations over the past 8 years.  This spring we determined that our Cuban friends are ready to equip on their own!

This was joyously confirmed.  We recently received the following report (excerpts below) from one of the key leaders.

Saturday we finished three courses for 20 church members. It was a SUCCESS.
The evaluations had one unanimous comment:  These courses arrived at an opportune time.

Our pastor left in much conflict and divisions.  I don't have words to explain how these brothers grew spiritually during those 5 days.  In Renewing, several asked forgiveness for previous conflicts and cried and hugged.  Many wept in repentance.

We had many difficulties finding paper and someone to print the manuals from the file you sent to us. The church had no funds and even $1.50 was too much for some of our people.  The first day our lunch was 15 eggs from our chickens, someone brought rice, and we bought beans.  The second day everyone brought something.  The last day we set up lunch like a restaurant and called it Restaurant EMI.  This was a very beautiful experience.

We had many difficulties with some saying we should cancel.  But with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were able to press on.   As the courses progressed everyone became more integrated into the body of Christ.   Our church can return to warmth, empathy, and respect among the brethren.  These courses were medicine for my church.

Facilitator Training DVD kit ($49)

Facilitated small groups are key to a life-changing experience in EMI workshops. For some, the time it takes to take a class does not fit into their busy schedule.

EMI has developed a special DVD kit for training your facilitators. Here's how it works: On an evening just prior to your Listening or Speaking the Truth in Love workshop, designate three and half hours for facilitator training. The DVD will take your facilitators through each small group exercise and role model exactly what they will be doing as a facilitator. An opportunity to break down into small groups and DO each group session is included in the DVD training. Your facilitators don't even need to have taken the class first.

We've made it easy for you!

Give us a call. We'd be happy to process the best options for equipping the specific needs of your church.
